The review published in the Journal of Intensive Care : “Vitamin C may reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients: a meta-regression analysis” postulates that vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) can shorten the duration of mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients by an average of 25 percent. Without supplementation, plasma vitamin C levels are particularly low in critically ill patients. The more ill a patient is, the higher the consumption of vitamin C apparently is. In the study mentioned above, the scientists put forward the hypothesis that there is a connection between the severity of the disease and the beneficial effect of vitamin C administration.
